Tomorrow, Dec 16, we will have time to peer edit and practice timing and speaking skills. Thursday, Dec 17, we will do a mock debate rehearsal to practice timing, order, and speaking skills.
We are currently preparing for our debate, the finals for which will take place immediately after Winter Break. All debate materials, topics, and teams are on Google Classroom. So far (as of Dec 15) students should have rough drafts of their three speeches, brainstormed listed of potential opposing arguments, and at least a page of notes on their topic and potential evidence. Keep track of all sources!

Sophomores and Juniors worked in their Performance Assessment workbooks today. We read and answered questions on the sources on pages 10-13 and then completed the chart on page 14 to evaluate the credibility of the sources we read. We discussed how to determine if a source is credible and compared the reliability of the 4 sources given in the workbook.
HW: Finish workbook through page 14 if you haven't already. Be reading your outside reading book. Bring workbook, LD debate notes, and debate body paragraph to class tomorrow/Friday to turn in for this week's notebook grade. Check the schedule under School News as we have 4 longer periods Thursday and 2 Friday so each class only meets once over the two days and Friday is a half day. Use the email [email protected] to look up the sign up for Junior Class. See link below in the document. Today we finished watching yesterday's debate video (see yesterday's post for link) and finished taking notes on each round. Students also wrote who they thought won and why. After we finished the debate and discussed the verdict we wrote a body paragraph on who won. The body paragraph should have 8 sentences and 2 concrete details. See below for a template. You do not have to use my sentence starters but you can if you need to. There is a guest speaker talking about social justice coming to the district office this Wednesday. Students can receive extra credit by attending and taking notes on the presentation and providing evidence of attendance (such as a program, agenda, or pic of themselves at the event.) The evidence of attendance and the notes are worth 25 points extra credit total. The event flyer is below: Today we watched, discussed, and took notes on another sample debate. The video link is here. Students should use the format on this handout to organize their notes. We will finish the debate and discuss the results tomorrow.
HW: Be reading outside reading book for Book Talk 2. Turn in nb and performance assessment workbook ASAP if you haven't already. We had the PPP assembly so classes were about 5 minutes shorter today. We read our outside reading books for 30 minutes. Students who needed a new book went to the library. After reading time, sophomores took a quiz on Google Classroom about the debate terms we learned this week. The juniors did not take the quiz because the assembly ran over time and shortened those classes further.
Students also turned in their notebooks and Performance Assessment workbooks. The grading slip with the list of items is here. Students were given time to review their work and turn in their notebooks at the end of class. There is not homework but students should be working on reading their second outside reading book. Today we warmed up by using Quizlet to practice Debate terms. Directions and the link to Quizlet are on Google Classroom stream. After Quizlet, we read pages 4-7 in the Performance Assessment work book I checked out to students yesterday and answered the questions. After reading, we had a class discussion about the topic presented. Complete an entry for the contest below that meets all contest requirements and submit to me, ready to submit but not sealed, by the contest deadline for up to 25 points extra credit. Today we completed Journal 1 and had a class discussion about the topic and how they relate to current events, social media, and the rest of our classwork so far this year. The topic was to be completed in their composition notebooks. Follow all directions for full points when I collect notebooks THIS FRIDAY. Journal 1: A private software company has designed software that, if uploaded to the internet, will fact check everything on the internet and remove anything that is incorrect or inaccurate. The government is deciding whether or not implement this software and wants your input. Should this software be used? Why or why not? Give arguments and specific examples. Write ½ page and title and date. After the journal, we took notes on basic debate structure and strategies. The link to the ppt for today's lecture is http://www.slideshare.net/mmcdonald2/debating-introduction and students should have 1/2 to a full page of notes. See me for help. HW: Bring performance assessment workbook and comp book to class tomorrow. Be thinking about potential debate topics and team members. Start reading second outside reading book. The requirements are the same as the first and it will be due the week of semester finals. Book Talk Outside Reading Book Requirements 300+ pages (unless approved by Malowney) fiction (not real) all-one-story (not a collection of short stories, etc) grade level appropriate (not a middle school book!) NOT A MOVIE If you have any questions about these requirements or would like to argue for an exception, feel free to come see me with the book and we can discuss. I will be offering extra credit for reading a third book this semester or choosing a book from the classics list below that ALSO meets the above requirements and is not currently taught at our high school. |
