Sophomore and Junior classesToday we read outside reading books (book talks are Jan 21) while I did notebook checks. See me Tuesday if you did not turn in your notebook today. The only homework over the long weekend is to read the outside reading book. If you'd like to get ahead, I will be assigning the pre-conference form next for the book talk and you can download it from under assignments tab on this site and get it done ahead of time. If you need extra credit, there is a creative writing link on Google Classroom or HERE. You can also read an extra outside reading book for extra credit.
Sophomores should also be through part one of Fahrenheit 451 so get caught up on that if you need to this weekend!!! Sophomores
Wednesday: Complete first 5 vocabulary words on yesterday's handout. For each word, write the page number, sentence in context, and the definition. We also spent time discussing yesterday's study questions and part one of the novel. Thursday: Finish F451 Part 1 Analysis--due Friday. HW: Finish part one analysis and bring nb and outside reading book to class Friday. Notebook should contain the following: F451 vocabulary squares, F451 vocabulary creative story, audio guide sketchnotes, F451 analysis, and part one reading strategies Juniors Wednesday/Thursday Read and complete reading strategies for the news article, "Men in the Media". See me for a handout. Read through page 36 of Death of a Salesman and take notes on family, gender roles, legacy, and how to treat people in comp book. Discuss the novel in large group. HW: create a collage of 5-10 images from current media that represent how men are portrayed and/or what's society's expectations are of men. See below for an example. Today we had a visit from the counselors in lieu of a warm-up. They passed back the PSAT booklets and let the students know that scores will be available tomorrow at lunch in the Agora. Students should pick up their scores and use the booklets to see which items they missed and why. There is also an optional advisory meeting with counselors in the theatre later this week. After the PSAT information, we practiced listening skills and a new type of note taking strategy. We listened to the audio guide for Fahrenheit 451 and took notes using the SketchNote method. Click on the link above to listen if you weren't here. Take notes on a piece of printer paper using the SketchNote method (example pic at bottom of post) as you listen. Notes should go in your comp book when you are done. HW: Read pages 1-34 of F451 (books were passed out today) or listen to the audio book for half of Part 1. There's also an ebook if you don't have your novel with you or want to read it digitally. Warm-up: Vocabulary for Fahrenheit 451 Use the five words from yesterday’s vocabulary activity to write an original story at least one paragraph long. All words must be used correctly and be underlined as they are used. Students may change tenses or make plural if necessary to fit the story. Remind them to title and date their work. Spend the rest of the period silently reading their outside reading books. Remind them their book talks are January 21. A reminder of the book requirements is below: 300+ pages; all-one-story; not a movie; high school level; fiction Juniors We finished reading the article we began talking about yesterday, “Roles in a Dysfunctional Family.” Read the article silently and complete the following reading strategies as you read: 5 new words circled 3 or more questions in the margins Highlight key points and information Write a summary in the margin for each section. Students should recreate and complete the following chart to show comprehension (put example up on doc camera). They should have a DOAS character chosen for each role and also someone they know personally whom they think fits the role. It can be their own family, a friend, or someone from a TV show or movie. Juniors:
2. Watch Honeymooners clip and take notes on social norms reflected in them. 3. Discuss how society’s view of woman and social norms around gender have changed in the past 60 years. 4. Read and complete reading strategies for Roles in Dysfunctional Family Handout. Reflect on which character in DOAS fits each role and how it relates to your own family. HW: Explore media to look for examples that support or refute the social norms we discussed today. Do these attitudes still exist? Have they changed? How so? Find at least 5 examples and include source and a sentence or two about why you chose that example and how it relates. Sophomores
