10th: We warmed up with Journal 2 (See below for journal 2 topic). We discussed the journal and then spent the rest of the class period in small groups discussing and responding to the anticipation guide below. Each student should have a 1/2 page journal response and ten anticipation guide responses (agree or disagree and at least one sentence of explanation) in their comp book at the end of class. We will debrief the anticipation guide tomorrow. There was also an enrichment opportunity provided in class that can be found below as well. We discussed the journal and then defined and discussed characterization. We began working on the character chart that students will finish tonight for homework. Students should have read through chapter 4 so far. Please return the movie permission slip if you have not already. Copies of the permission slip and other assignments can be downloaded under the assignments tab in the Into the Wild folder. HW: finish character chart we started in class; extra credit for finding a newspaper or historical reference that relates to today's journal topic and writing a brief reflection. If you do not yet have a novel checked out to you, see me immediately. Sophomore English Periods 1-2 Today we used our Island Scenario Personas to participate in the Island Activity. The persona assignment and the Island Activity are downloadable from the assignments tab in the Lord of the Flies folder. HW: Complete the reflection assignment related to today's activity. I will be checking comp books tomorrow for notes from the activity, the persona assignment, and the reflection. Junior English Periods 5-6 Today we completed a Socratic Seminar discussing the Ralph Waldo Emerson article, "Self-Reliance". We began by writing 5 questions related to the article on the "open ended questions" worksheet. We then reviewed norms, procedures, and the rubric and used the opening question to begin the discussion. Inner circle talkers are graded using the rubric and are required to participate, use the text, and ask insightful questions. Listeners in the outside circle are graded on taking notes and completing the partner rubric. All items are available in the socratic seminar folder under "assignments" on this site. No homework tonight. We will complete the seminar reflection tomorrow. Periods 1-2 Journal Warm-up: Answer the question below in composition notebook. Title and date entry and write AT LEAST ½ a page. Journal 1 Lord of the Flies: The zombie apocalypse has taken place and you are one of the survivors. You find yourself in a group of people who are trying to establish a new society. What steps would you take to create a new society? What would your plan be for creating it? What are the most important components of an effective society? What should your priorities be? After the journal, we took time to discuss as a large group. Write key society components the group comes up with in your comp notebook. Read chapter one of Lord of the Flies. Write own down evidence of the boys’ attempt to create a new society. You should find at least three examples. Title and date your entry. HW: Finish reading chapter 1; UPLOAD ESSAY BY MIDNIGHT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY English 11 Periods 5-6 Journal Warm-up: Answer the question below in composition notebook. Title and date entry and write AT LEAST ½ a page. Journal 1 Into the Wild: Do you think you could survive on your own in the wilderness? Why or why not? What would you need to be able to do to survive? Have you ever been in a survival situation? How do you think you would react? Would you keep your cool or panic? Read Chapter 1 of Into the Wild silently and look for quotes that illustrate Chris McCandless’ (the boy’s) character traits. Write down in your comp book at least three quotes that tell us something about his character. Title and date your quotes. HW: Read Chapter 2 and record at least three more quotes that give evidence of character traits. UPLOAD ESSAY BY MIDNIGHT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY. Today we spent the period working on independent reading, grade checks, and essay revision.
