We warmed up with the prompt shown in the white board photo below, which we discussed after a ten minute writing period. We then completed the reading strategies for both articles (Atticus' closing argument and MLK speech--downloadable from assignments/TKAM) and discussed both. The last ten minutes of class, students began working in groups to answers the analysis questions on posters.
Analysis Questions For Posters: 1. How do Martin Luther King and the character Atticus Finch build on their arguments? 2. What situations do they cite in their speeches? 3. Who is their audience? How different is King’s audience from Finch’s audience? 4. What case or point are King and Finch trying to make? 5. In what time period do the two speeches take place? 6. How are the two speeches relevant to the time/story? 7. What commonalities do they share? 8. Why are they significant to our lives and our history? We will finish that activity Friday and complete the reflection part of the activity. HW: Be reading TKAM with the goal of finishing early next week. Should be through AT LEAST Ch. 25 by today. Find and check out an outside reading book if you haven't already. BOOK TALKS JUNE 13 Bring supplies to work on maps Thursday May 29 in class. On time notebooks and grade slips were returned today. Late notebooks are 8 malowmoney today and 10 tomorrow unless it is late due to an excused absence.

HW: Read through Chapter 25 of the novel. There will be a pop quiz on Tuesday on these chapters. The score will be entered in the homework category on Skyward, which is worth 10% of the total grade so GET CAUGHT UP WITH THE READING. Today we worked again on our map projects in class. Tomorrow, there is a quiz on chapters 1-20 of TKAM and we will turn in nb and hw for the past two weeks. The grading slip was handed out in class and can also be downloaded from assignments/TKAM on this site. Don't forget to study the vocabulary words

Finish trial Reader's Theatre
Discuss Ch. 16-18 and write down answers to study questions (all study questions can be downloaded from assignments/TKAM. HW: Read Ch. 19-20 and complete the following reading strategies: 5 questions as you read 5 new words with definitions 5 sentence summary of both chapters 1 prediction Get an outside reading book and start reading if you haven't already! Book talk 4 June 13!!! Journal 4: Are the court systems fair toward minorities in today's society? Why or why not? Give specific examples. What would need to change to make the court system operate the way you think it should and be totally unbiased? Write at least 1/2 page and title/date.
Chapter 17-18 Reader's Theatre acted out in class. The script is available under assignments/TKAM Students worked in groups to update their plot line; they should now have 15 events minimum (one per chapter we've read so far).
Students also updated character charts in their groups; they should have at least 8 events and 8 quotes with page numbers on their character charts. An example of character chart format can be downloaded from assignments/TKAM. After updating the charts, students worked in their map groups to finish planning what their product will be and finding quotes and characters for each setting. We will have at least one day next week for construction work time on map project. The project is not due until the end of May as we will need to finish the novel before completing it. HW: read through ch 18 and add three more events to your plot line; bring materials for 3D map Monday We began by reviewing definitions for and taking notes on theme and symbolism. If you were absent, you can get an advisory pass to view the presentation during advisory and make up the notes. We then watched two video clips on symbolism and themes in TKAM. We made a T-chart with symbols on one side and themes on the other. The video clips are Symbolism in TKAM and TKAM Symbols and Allusions
After the notes, we spent the rest of the period completing a concept map on one of the themes, courage, from TKAM. The concept map template can be found under assignments/TKAM. HW: Students should be through chapter 15 of the novel and tonight's hw is to complete study questions for chapters 11-12. All study questions can be downloaded from assignments/TKAM. |
